2004 was a year and a half! Nasa placed two landers on Mars, Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl wardrobe malfunctioned and the Tampa Bay Lightning won Lord Stanley’s Cup.

In 2020, TBL defeated the Dallas Stars 2-0 in Game 6.  Florida also aced the first major title decision since ‘shelter-in-place’.

TBL’s amazing win tops a whole series of firsts:

This was first Stanley Cup Finals series since 1928 played entirely in one location.

The only season since 1989 to be played entirely in Canada, and the first since 2011 where the Stanley Cup was awarded in Canada.

These were first Cup Finals since 1950 played at a neutral site.

Surprisingly, also the first Stanley Cup Finals featuring two American Sun Belt  teams: (Texas and Florida).

Uniquely, COVID-19 restrictions forced this  Cup Final played in September.

Finally, this were the first Stanley Cup Finals since 2002 whose losing team didn’t win a home game.

Social media stood in for live crowds. Seconds after the final buzzer on the 2019-20 NHL season, the sports world stormed Twitter. The twittersphere exploded with congratulations, commiserations and ‘being the thunder’ from TBL’s notorious 2014 billboard.

TBL’s  2004 win – under head coach John Tortorella – beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 in Game 7. Tampa’s made 12 playoff seasons and three final appearances. Head coach Jon Cooper carried Tampa to the Cup finals in 2015, losing 2-0 in Game 6 to the Chicago Blackhawks.

SUPER BOWL LV TAMPA

SUPER BOWL LV TAMPA 2021

SUPER BOWL LV TAMPA Erehwon Retreat

The Buccaneers heading to Super Bowl LV marks the fourth Bay area sports team to secure a spot in their respective championship in the past year.

Despite all the troubles 2020 brought, it was an incredible time for Tampa Bay area sports teams. The Bucs are in good company with the Stanley Cup champions: the Tampa Bay Lightning; the MLB American League champions: the Tampa Bay Rays; and the USL Eastern Conference winners: the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Tampa has previously hosted four Super Bowls (1984, 1991. 2001, 2009). The last two played in Tampa took place at the Raymond James Stadium (just 3 miles from Erehwon Retreat). We call it the Ray Jay here in Tampa!

The City of Tampa renovated Raymond James Stadium in 2016, adding new HD video boards and a sound system. Further improvements include suites, concessions and locker rooms. The current seating capacity is 65,000 but is expandable to 75,000 for a big game.

Hosting any major sporting event in Tampa is a breeze, due to our excellent climate and popular local activities. Of course, Erehwon Retreat looks forward to showcasing our unique 1923 Arts and Craft Bungalow and Cottage experience. And choosing us gives you amazing  proximity to the stadium.

Super Bowl Opening Night POWERED BY BOLT 24 is the national kick off for Super Bowl LV festivities, held virtually this year on Monday, February 1, 2021. Be a part of the action as the Super Bowl players and coaches address the nation for the first time LIVE. Super Bowl Opening Night is the first place that Super Bowl players and coaches from both teams will interact with media before the Super Bowl.

Celebrate Super Bowl LV in Tampa Bay! Fans have the opportunity to attend Super Bowl Experience, the NFL and Host Committee’s joint interactive football theme park as Super Bowl LV touches down in Tampa. Super Bowl Experience Presented by Lowe’s – NFL’s interactive football theme park –will return to Tampa for Super Bowl LV from Friday, January 29 – Sunday, January 31 and from Wednesday, February 3 – Saturday, February 6 along the Tampa Riverwalk. To celebrate the history of the NFL, Super Bowl Experience will offer fans the opportunity virtually meet & greet with current NFL players and Legends, participate in games, and shop merchandise from NFL Shop presented by Visa. Super Bowl Experience will also feature photos with the Vince Lombardi Trophy, a 40-yard dash and vertical jump against NFL players on LED screens, and a Super Bowl rings display showcasing all 54 Super Bowl rings!

Super Bowl History

At Erehwon Retreat we have visitors from around the world, so I’m just going to explain a little about the Super Bowl to those who might not understand this great American institution. It’s the annual championship game of the American National Football League (NFL). Traditionally, from 2004 until 2020, it’s been held on the first Sunday in February. In 2020, due to COVID-19, it took place in September. What else can I say? It’s the second biggest food day in the USA after Thanksgiving. It’s also the most watched TV broadcast of the year – not just sports broadcasting – total TV! Finally, the Super Bowls in Tampa or elsewhere  are famous for half time adverts. This is the most expensive commercial airtime of the year, and companies create advertising just for the Super Bowl.

If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (known as the Bucs) make it to the Super Bowl and win it will be a first. Sadly, the Vegas odds of a Bucs win are 60 to 1. Still, we’re crossing our fingers …  the BUCS WIN!!

1000 Guests at Erehwon Retreat

1000 guests are right

Sophie Tucker’s record ‘Fifty-million Frenchmen can’t be wrong’ alludes to the  free-and-easy attitude to drinking in France seven years into Prohibition in the U.S.A. A historian friend mentioned Tucker’s hit, after Erehwon Retreat’s 1000th guest checked out.  1000 guests are right because 2020 marks our tenth season. We’ve enjoyed a decade of:

  • welcoming vacationers,
  • practicing the skills of hospitality,
  • offering a relaxing, inspirational home base from which to explore Tampa and the wider central Florida region.

A thousand vacations … what makes Erehwon Retreat so special?

It’s been a decade of hard work to make Erehwon Retreat unique. Florida is full of places to vacation, so it’s been our mission to combine the t charm of a vacation home rental with superb features. We offer more space, safety, security plus white glove cleaning /disinfection, alongside a personal welcome and on-site concierge.

Wilcox Nursery and I planned to build a Florida native plant garden, to show visitors native plants and wildlife. Now they can spot them on local hikes. I hope that those in Executive Transfer while looking for a Florida home learn to help the environment and support wildlife. My dream has become a reality, delivering dozens of different native birds and butterflies to Erehwon Retreat’s doorstep.

Awards for Erehwon Retreat

This year the garden was designated a Wildlife Habitat by the National and Florida Wildlife Federation. It’s a huge honor, but more importantly,  vacationers who stay with us experience the best of Florida on their doorstep. My Grandmother said, “planting a garden is to believe in tomorrows.” Our garden is the tomorrow of our vacation rental.

The universal language of hospitality

I’ve always worked in the performing arts – so I have know music and dance are ways to communicate across boundaries. Since developing Erehwon Retreat, I’ve learned that hospitality is a universal language too. When Erehwon opened, it was aimed at Americans; today 12% of our guests are from overseas. Their expectations are different. Whether they come from America or Asia, it’s important to know their particular likes and dislikes – it makes for fascinating new discoveries.

Online hospitality for 1000 guests

Offering an experience of the 1920s to people from around the world is a joy. As part of our 10th anniversary, I developed a stronger guest experience, which is why, since December 8 we’ve made Erehwon Retreat  available in 25 different languages. I chose them through having hosted at least one guest from each language. For example, Erehwon Retreat hosted two guests from Argentina, and one each from Spain, Paraguay, Mexico and the Dominican Republic – hence our Spanish language site is  very popular! Looking back it’s hard to believe we’ve welcomed guests from so many countries.

The Erehwon Retreat perspective

From period decorative details to wildlife-watching opportunities over breakfast on the deck, I’ve designed my holiday house to be truly special and unique. Luxury one meant three-piece-suits and starched shirts, but that’s changing and our guests want a  genuine approach to service rather than formalities. Many people agree that I’ve achieved my aim.

This year, Erehwon Retreat won the Tampa Award for Vacation Rental Agency. What makes my vacation home unique is my commitment to service. Just as AirBnB is moving to AirBnB Plus to offer guests a more valuable, unique rental experience, I know every future visitor will discover just what makes 1000 guests right. Erehwon Retreat is special, and whatever language you speak,  we’ll share the language of hospitality.

Give it up for Sophie Tucker …

Winter Weather

Winter Weather Vacations in Florida

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter snow warning on October 29, 2011.  It says travel conditions may be hazardous as an unseasonable snowstorm hits the East Coast.

Winter Storm Watch means severe winter conditions, such as heavy snow and/or ice, may affect your area, but its occurrence, location and timing are still uncertain. … A Winter Weather Advisory informs you that winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences that may be hazardous.

Winter weather marks the winter booking season for everyone except Snowbirds.  They make their reservations for the following winter between April and August.

Beginning a week after Labor Day we see the number of website views and visitors rise.  It’s when the length of time on site doubles that reservation planning kicks into gear.  But once the snow flies, suddenly its time to finalize winter getaway plans—particularly from Illinois,  Michigan,  Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the Canadian Maritime Provinces.
